Questions from Parkland homeowners

Does running low-voltage TV or speaker wiring need a permit in Parkland?

Parkland's Building Department FAQ says an electrical permit must be obtained before adding to or extending any electrical circuit, high or low voltage, and that the only work that clearly does not need one is the direct replacement of a fan or fixture. It also says extension cords may never be used in place of permanent wiring, and the department publishes a separate Low Voltage permit checklist.

Can my Parkland HOA stop me from building an interior TV wall?

Florida law limits that. Under Section 720.3035(1)(b), Florida Statutes, an HOA or its architectural committee may not enforce or adopt a rule that limits or places requirements on the interior of a structure that is not visible from the parcel's frontage, an adjacent parcel, a common area or a community golf course. Exterior work is another matter, so check your association's rules if a project shows from outside.

Can I pull the permit myself for work on my Parkland home?

Florida law generally requires licensed contractors, but Section 489.103(7), Florida Statutes, lets an owner act as their own contractor under set conditions, and Parkland's FAQ spells them out. You must personally supervise the work, you cannot hire an unlicensed contractor, anyone helping you who is not a licensed contractor must be your employee, and you cannot sell or lease the building within one year after construction is complete.
